What the extension usually means
Driving-other-cars cover is normally an extension attached to a policy on another vehicle. It often provides limited third-party cover and can carry age, occupation, ownership or emergency-use conditions. Not every comprehensive policy includes it.
The only reliable starting point is the current certificate and policy wording. An old assumption based on a previous insurer, or a line shown on a comparison screen, is not enough for an impound appointment.
Impound release is an extra hurdle
Even where the extension permits road driving, it may not permit release from a government impound. Police guidance can ask for a certificate that deals with release specifically. Pound staff may contact the insurer when the arrangement depends on a general extension.
Tell the insurer the registration, who owns and keeps the car, why it was seized and that the proposed journey begins at the pound. Ask for written confirmation if the provider says the extension applies.
Ownership restrictions cause problems
Many extensions exclude cars owned by the policyholder, their partner or somebody in the same household. Others apply only when the car has its own underlying insurance. Those conditions can defeat the very arrangement being proposed.
Do not transfer ownership on paper merely to fit a clause. The pound may ask for V5C and purchase evidence, while the insurer relies on an honest account of ownership and use.
A nominated driver still needs approval
If the keeper cannot drive, the pound may allow a nominated person to collect, but it will set the authority and identity requirements. The collector’s licence must be valid for the vehicle and their insurance must cover the release and journey.
The keeper may need to attend, supply a letter or remain available. Confirm this before the nominated driver buys cover or arranges time away from work.
Questions for both organisations
Ask the insurer and pound about:
- the exact vehicle and owner;
- the collector’s relationship to the keeper;
- impound-release wording;
- whether an underlying vehicle policy is required;
- the cover level and permitted use after release;
- authority papers and who must attend.
If the driving-other-cars extension cannot be used, ask about adding the nominated person to suitable vehicle-specific cover or using a transporter under an agreed procedure. Do not drive first and seek confirmation afterwards.
Why a friend’s comprehensive policy may not help
Before depending on another driver’s policy, read the extension for exclusions such as:
- cars owned by the policyholder or partner;
- cars kept at the same address;
- vehicles without their own insurance;
- commercial, delivery or hire use;
- release from an impound;
- drivers below a stated age.
The certificate may say the policyholder can drive other vehicles with the owner’s permission, but the fuller policy wording often contains the conditions. Ask the insurer to consider the named registration and circumstances rather than answering only a general question about the extension.
The keeper should give genuine permission and follow the pound’s authority process. A quick letter written at the gate may be rejected if identification or keeper evidence is missing. If the keeper is unavailable, explain why and ask what alternative evidence the holding organisation accepts.
After release, the car must still have any underlying insurance required by the extension, and the nominated driver must use it within the permitted purpose. Third-party-only cover may leave vehicle damage uninsured. Make sure everyone understands this before deciding who will drive.
If specialist vehicle-specific cover is arranged instead, check who is policyholder, main user and keeper. Do not name the friend as main driver purely to reduce price or bypass an eligibility issue. The insurer’s account should match the V5C, authority letter and explanation given to the pound.
If the friend will transport rather than drive the car, the recovery operator still needs a clear authority and the correct equipment. Ask whether the owner must be present and whether the pound requires insurance for the impounded vehicle despite transport. Do not assume using a truck makes the driving-other-cars question irrelevant to release; some authorities require a suitable certificate in every case.
